When it comes to modern bathroom design in Edinburgh, the “floating” look is currently the gold standard. Wall-hung toilets and vanity units offer a sleek, minimalist aesthetic that can transform a cluttered bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary.
However, unlike standard floor-mounted fixtures, these units require a high level of technical precision and structural planning. At Scott Eco-Builders, we believe that the beauty of a wall-hung fixture is only as good as the engineering behind the wall.
Here is everything you need to know about the plumbing, fixings, and design of wall-hung bathroom installations.
The Design Advantage: Why Go Wall-Hung?
The primary reason homeowners choose wall-hung fixtures is space. By lifting the toilet and vanity off the floor, you expose more of the floor tiling. This creates a visual illusion of more square footage—a massive benefit in compact Edinburgh en-suites or tenement bathrooms.
The next big reason is overall hygiene. Without a base meeting the floor, there are no “dust traps” or awkward corners to clean. You can simply mop right underneath.
There is also a big advantage of custom height. Unlike floor-mounted units, wall-hung fixtures can be installed at a bespoke height tailored specifically to your comfort.
The Skeleton: Concealed Frames and Fixings
The most common question we get is: “Will it hold my weight?” The answer is a resounding yes—but only if the “skeleton” is installed correctly.
Wall-hung toilets rely on a concealed steel frame (often brands like Geberit or Grohe) hidden inside the wall or a custom-built duct.
If you have a solid brick wall, the frame is bolted directly into the masonry. In modern timber-frame homes or stud partitions, we reinforce the wall with additional timber noggins or heavy-duty steel brackets to ensure the unit can support up to 400kg (around 63 stone).
Floating vanities require similar foresight. Because they carry the weight of the basin, the water, and your toiletries, we often “tank” and reinforce the wall before any tiling begins to prevent the unit from sagging over time.
Precision Plumbing
Plumbing for wall-hung units is unforgiving. With a standard toilet, you have some wiggle room with the waste pipe. With a wall-hung system, the plumbing must be millimetre-perfect before the wall is closed up and tiled.
The water tank is hidden behind the wall. This means the internal components must be high-quality and accessible through the flush plate for future maintenance.
The waste pipe must have the correct fall within a very tight space. At Scott Eco-Builders, our “all-inclusive” approach means our plumbers and tilers work side-by-side to ensure the pipes align perfectly with the future tile layout.

Tiling and Finishing Touches
The finish is where the expertise of a professional installer really shows. Because the toilet or vanity sits directly against the tile, the cuts must be flawless.
The flush plates serve as the only access point to your plumbing. Choosing a high-quality flush plate that matches your brassware (chrome, matte black, or brushed brass) is the final piece of the design puzzle.
As for lightning, many of our clients opt for recessed LED strip lighting underneath the floating vanity. This creates a soft “night light” effect and further emphasizes the floating design.
Why Professional Installation is Essential
Installing wall-hung fixtures is not a DIY job. It requires a harmony of carpentry (for the boxing/frames), plumbing (for the concealed cistern), and expert tiling.
Because Scott Eco-Builders provides an all-inclusive service, we manage the entire process. You don’t have to worry about the plumber blaming the tiler if things don’t line up; our team handles it all to ensure a seamless, high-end finish that stands the test of time.

Reviews
Always excellent. We have had several great projects with Mike, and appreciate his responsiveness and the high quality of the work.
Despite a couple of delays and slight cost overrun (mostly not their fault - massive unexpected girder under the floor - bit of a hassle no-one knew about) and some minor miscommunications (mutual) we are incredibly happy with the work done. Clean, crisp, professional finish. Good work ethic, friendly service, worth the money!
Excellent service. Great advice given. Really helpful and professional. Would highly recommend and will be back for more work in the next year! Thank you!
Mike at Scott-Eco did a fantastic job on my house - the work involved removing a structural wall to architect specifications, fitting an entirely new kitchen, and levelling the floor between the rooms.
Mike really went above and beyond - frequently working long days and even weekends. He managed the project and kept us well informed throughout the process, with updates and photos of the work as it progressed, and he was able to make necessary adjustments to the plans when issues arose.
The work was completed to a high standard surprisingly quickly. We're very happy with the final result.
Mike and his team (shout-out to Ludo the master tiler!) were excellent. They did a whole kitchen and en-suite bathroom refurb for us. Mike was extremely communicative, professional and prompt. The price was also competitive, and the finished products are a dream. We would recommend them in a heartbeat.
