Choosing the Right Tile for Every Room

Picking a tile is rarely just about colour. The material you choose has to cope with steam in a bathroom, dropped pans in a kitchen, and the damp Edinburgh winters that test anything laid outdoors. Get the material wrong and even the most carefully installed tiling will struggle. Get it right, and it will outlast the rest of the renovation around it.

Bathrooms & Wet Rooms: Porcelain First, Stone with Care

Bathrooms put tiles through the most punishing conditions in the house — constant moisture, temperature swings, and bare feet that need a sure footing.

Porcelain is our default recommendation for shower floors and walls. It’s denser and less porous than standard ceramic, so it resists water absorption and staining far better over time. For floors, we look for a slip rating suited to wet feet rather than choosing on looks alone.

Natural stone — travertine, marble, slate — gives a beautiful, high-end finish, but it’s porous by nature and needs regular sealing to stay watertight. It’s a lovely choice for a feature wall or a more occasional-use en-suite, less so for a family bathroom in daily use.

Kitchens: Built to Take a Hit

Kitchen tiles live a tougher life than most people expect — hot pans, dropped knives, and constant cleaning. For floors, we steer clients towards porcelain or high-grade ceramic in a matt or lightly textured finish, which hides scuffs and resists slipping far better than high-gloss options.

For splashbacks, the choice opens up. Glass and metro-style ceramic tiles are easy to wipe clean and reflect light well in smaller kitchens, while large-format porcelain slabs are increasingly popular for a near-seamless look with minimal grout lines to maintain. Hallways & High-Traffic Floors

Hallways take more footfall than almost any other space, often straight from outdoors. Porcelain is the clear choice here: it’s harder-wearing than ceramic, less prone to scratching, and far less likely to chip at the edges where shoes and bags catch it daily. Larger format tiles also mean fewer grout lines to collect grit and dirt over a Scottish winter of mud and salt.

Period & Historic Homes: Sympathetic Choices

Many of the properties we work on sit in Edinburgh’s New Town, Leith, or other conservation areas, where the tile choice needs to respect the character of the building as much as its practicality. Encaustic-style or Victorian-pattern tiles are a popular way to bring period charm to a hallway or scullery floor without compromising on modern durability — porcelain versions now replicate the look convincingly while being far easier to maintain than the originals. For porches, utility rooms, and outdoor patios, frost resistance is non-negotiable in our climate. Porcelain pavers rated for exterior use are our go-to — they’re dense enough to resist the freeze-thaw cycles that crack lesser materials over a few Scottish winters.

Material Is Half the Story

The right tile, badly installed, will still fail early. The right tile, properly bedded on a sound substrate with correct waterproofing and a precise layout, will genuinely last decades. That’s why we treat material selection and installation as one conversation, not two — it’s the same philosophy behind everything we do as an eco-builder: choose well once, rather than replace twice.
